ABOUT US
We managed to survive Super Storm Sandy and have become the largest emergency food provider in the Coney Island area. The Coney Island Lighthouse Mission is dedicated to fighting hunger and poverty in our community through the many services we provide to those in need. For those families in need of food, we distribute free grocery bags two days a week and serve hot meals to the public every Wednesday & Friday evenings. We are currently serving over 4,000 people every month. Our after-school program began in 2007 and provides homework assistance and tutoring, hot snacks, games, art projects, and bible study for students aged 5-13 Monday-Friday. We are open five days a week to receive new clients, provide information, and make appointments for free benefits screening and submit food stamp applications with a social worker on-site. In addition, the Lighthouse Mission conducts special holiday outreach programs such as distributing hundreds of Thanksgiving turkeys in the community.
Our mission is to meet the immediate needs of our clients while offering additional, necessary services to help move families toward self-sufficiency. We provide ESL and GED training, drug and alcohol counseling, housing for several formerly homeless clients, job readiness training, and information on public benefits to reduce the dependence on emergency food. We want to be known as the place to go for anyone in need in our community!
